What to See and Do in Durban, South Africa
We wanted to expand 5 Things to Do by giving you a few extra choices of what to see and do in the terrific city of Durban. I had the joy of visiting Africa’s third biggest city for three incredible days and take in some of the local culture, cuisine, along with also popular sights.
Moses Mabhida Stadium
Durban is a wonderful mixture of gritty, cosmopolitan, modern, and traditional — a real melting pot of African American hospitality and Zulu culture. The city is home to the busiest seaport from Africa, but it also boasts beaches, lively markets, delicious local dishes, and proximity.
Golden Mile
uShaka Marine World
Here is my list for things to see and do in Durban:
Victoria Street Market
The Moses Mabhida Stadium isn’t jus. It is also home according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The significant Rush swing has a height of over 721 feet (220 meters). Although you are not into that kind of adrenaline rush, but still want to enjoy the views you are given the chance to find Durban out of a vantage point by the SkyCar. For R60 per individual,
House of Curries
Tala Game Reserve
Durban’s Golden Mile, or”The Mile” for short, is among the city’s most well-known attractions. This pedestrian-friendly beachfront promenade is 6 km and has a large stretch of sandy shore, which is absolutely safe for swimming and surfing thanks to some system of shark baits. It’s also a wonderful place to navigate the crafts of local vendors, prevent and have a casual lunch, take a look at the Blue Lagoon fishing place where the uMngeni River flows into the sea, or become uShaka Marine World for a visit (see below).
Umhlanga Rocks
Amanzimtoti
UShaka Marine World is the biggest aquarium in Africa. Besides having a selection of marine life, uShaka Marine World boasts activities for every interest and age. Some of these contain the Wetn’ Wild water park, sea creature encounters (dolphins, rays, sharks), Chimp & Zee zipline playground, not to mention the Cargo Hold cafe located in a shipwreck. General admission is R175.
Ballito
Even the Victoria Street Market, also known as the Market, is the place to get your Durban souvenirs. Pick up a few Indian curry powder or beige packets to take home personally. I especially enjoyed surfing the meat, seafood, and produce market. A few vendors are selling handmade African crafts such as paintings, sculptures, and masks. Even the Victoria Street Market is open from 8am to 6pm (Monday-Saturday); 10am to 4pm (Sunday and public holidays).
It would be a pity to see Durban and miss out on a meal. House of Curries on Florida Road serves up big pieces of authentic curry dishes in a casual setting (believe sports pub vibe). The restaurant menu has roti, biryani, samosas, and tandoori dishes, however, their claim to fame would be the bunny chow (hollowed out loaf of bread filled with curry).
In under an hour drive from Durban that is bustling you could be on a ghostly safari in Tala Game Reserve — a mixture of open grassland and wetland. Tala is currently home to Rhino, Kudu, Hippo, Zebra, Giraffe, Sable, and lots of bird species. They provide game drives and bush walks, along with also a break in the city life should you need. Tala additionally has many kinds of lodging which range from services luxury lodges to self-catering cottages that are pastoral.
Umhlanga Rocks is among the safest regions of Durban, nicknamed the”South Beach of Durban.” It is famous for upscale nightlife its beautiful oceanfront resorts , sandy shores, and house . Gateway is the biggest mall in Africa and the biggest mall in the southern hemisphere.
Just south of Durban, Amanzimtoti (meaning’sweet waters’ in Zulu) is a place located along the Sapphire Coast. Its life makes it a very popular destination for scuba divers, surfers, snorkelers, and fisherman. There also the Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary, which is home to 150 bird species.
Ballito is just another resort town located 40 kilometers. Visitors come to enjoy its sandy beaches, amazing surfing conditions, along with 2.5-kilometer-long beachfront promenade. The frequent dolphin sightings have made it the nickname”Dolphin Coast.”
