Seeing the St. Sophia Greek Festival at Miami
This weekend my loved ones and I attended to the 39th annual Saint Sophia Greek Festival here in Miami. The festival takes place every year in February by Friday through Sunday at the Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Coral Way.
The St. Sophia Greek Festival is a family friendly event including Greek food and beverages, market stalls, Greek dancing, songs, and an entertainment area for those kids.
The church is open for all who would like to have a look, and it’s on the festival.
The area has markets promoting clothes, souvenirs, art and crafts, average products, jewelry, and spiritual artwork. There’s also hamburgers — souvlaki, gyros, along with vendors selling tavern fare.
Inside there’s lots of Greek foods to attempt such as moussaka, Zouzoukakia meatballs, pastitsio (Greek version of lasagna), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), salad, spanakopita spinach pies, and much more. Prices vary from $5 to $15 for a main dish with two sides.
I’d recommend skipping the food that is exterior and having a slice of moussaka using a side of roasted potatoes and a salad.
For dessert look no farther than the ladies frying up the loukoumades dough balls drizzled with honey and powdered sugar.
At approximately 1:15 PM the kids dance troupe began dancing into traditional songs. Folk dancing and music is a portion of culture and shouldn’t be missed!
I’d suggest sticking around to observe the dancing, researching the markets, having some lunch and heading to the festival around 11 AM. You could head to enjoy the rides should you wish. Adult admission is $5, children under 12 are free.
The St. Sophia Greek Festival takes place Friday and Saturday 11 AM — 11 PM and on Sunday from noon to 9 PM.
